40 Questions is made from a salvaged insurance database user manual, this book presents an imagined border crossing, a kind of recollection of myself as a child crossing from Mexico back to the US. The work was made in dialogue with Tell Me How It Ends by Valeria Luiselli. I used thermal print labels to overwrite pre-existing language and data on the pages, layering labels, and correction tape. Delicate images emerged: walking figures, an ID bracelet, random words and redactions. Created during the lulls of the workday—before meetings, toward the end of a break—this book reflects on status, systems, and the fragmentary nature of understanding displacement.
